January 29, 2014 StoryStarter prompt: The broken stay broken. You can try fixing them, and you may even think you have, but it never lasts...

Billy Adams was tried and convicted in the abduction, rape and bludgeoning death of 16-year-old Piper Hartwig of Fargo, ND.

Hartwig was raped with a piece of lumber and her head crushed by a 35-pound piece of asphalt after being abducted from a party by Adams. Her nude body was found near a creek off 79th Street with the piece of lumber still protruding from her vagina. When arrested, police found scratches and cuts on Adams' face and body.

The death penalty was handed down. He would be the first person to die by lethal injection since the state had reenacted the death penalty in 1974.

Throughout the trial he showed no remorse. After the verdict had been reached, one of the jurors was overheard telling her husband, "The broken stay broken. You can try fixing them, and you may even think you have, but it never lasts. Did he fail the system, or did the system fail him?"

**This is an actual case -- the details are the same but the place and the names have been changed.**
