She had never worn much make-up before him. Now she had to layer it on to hide how much he loved her from the rest of the world. If she would have just gotten home when she was supposed to have. It wasn't his fault. He couldn't help himself. He just lost his temper sometimes.

She winced as she gently layered on the thick makeup. Some "special stuff she'd purchased to cover the veins in her legs," she'd told the woman behind the cosmetic counter. The skeptical look in the lady's eyes told Amelia that she knew she was lying.

That's the thing about being in an abusive relationship. Pretty soon the lies roll off your lips like flood-waters through a breach in the levee. One lie becomes two, two becomes four. Soon you need a notebook to keep track of what story you told which person.

"Why don't you just leave," Naomi begged her stubborn friend. "Before he goes too far and kills you."

"He'll be better. He promised to start going to AA and stop drinking. If he's sober, he's the sweetest, most kind man in the world. I can't just leave him. He needs me," Amelia protested, almost believing the words she was saying.
